Christopher is a senior in college where he is finalizing his undergrad degree in social work while simultaneously awaiting acceptance into the Social Work master’s program. “My goal in continuing my education to obtain my masters is to lend me credibility as I am very open about my past history of drug addiction and alcoholism. I want to make changes on a systemic level, and be a role model by focusing on the barriers that stand in the way of individuals trying to advance in life despite the prior mistakes they have made. There is not a single person on this planet that has not done many things they regret …this should not stand in the way of people righting their wrongs and turning their life around. I want to be a voice of advocacy of this population and work to change legislature to allow former addicts and alcoholics to apply for jobs they would not normally be allowed to qualify for so they can be positive contributors to society. I would not have opportunities such as this if it weren’t for second, third, and fourth chances that multiple people have given me. Everyone, in my opinion, should be afforded these second chances as well.”
