Catie is a junior in college studying English with the hopes of becoming an inspiring author. “When I graduate, I hope to complete a fantasy novel and become a published author. I have always loved storytelling and I would love the opportunity to share my stories with whomever I can. As a non-binary person, I feel as though my gender identity is underrepresented in media, especially in genres such as fantasy. My hope is that one day, through my writing, I can help others who were like me growing up to be able to see themselves in the genre I have always loved so much. I hope to share stories in a way that amplifies the voices of so many people like me who felt afraid to be who they are.
With this grant, I will be able to have a little bit more money to go towards my regular living expenses, like paying for my car, groceries and general purchases like food. I will be able to work less and put more time and attention into my schoolwork and writing so that I can produce work that I am proud of and truly represent myself and my capabilities as a student. Receiving the grant felt like a huge weight off my shoulders. I have been supporting myself through school since my freshman year, and it felt as though for one moment I could breathe without needing to worry about money.”
