Feb '25 Austin (North Dakota)
Austin is studying hard so that he can go to medical school.
“I want to work in the medical field because the feelings that I have helped somebody feel better is one of the most noble pursuits in my mind. I believe that a person's health is their most important asset, and all parts of the medical field that help contribute to a healthier, happier patient should be celebrated. I believe the greatest impact we can leave is on the ones we have helped along the way, and the ones we inspire as we go on our way. It brings my heart joy when I hear a young patient say they want to go into Radiology as well.
I'd say some of the most intimidating obstacles I've had to overcome are of course financial, because there is nothing cheap or easy in this world anymore. And not being able to work full time while going to school does make paying bills a lot harder. However, the biggest obstacle I've ever had to overcome has been a sense of self doubt. Everybody in my family except for a few people has been blue collar workers their entire lives, and I was a blue collar farm worker for years before I decided to go back to school. I often wonder if I truly belong in the medical field, especially because the classes are among the most challenging I've ever had to take.
The first thing I did after receiving the Trace of Hope Grant was actually to go pay the licensing and taxes on my new car. My city does not have great public transportation options, and I live roughly 4 miles away from my school in one direction and my job in another direction. My parents helped me out in buying a more reliable car, but I was stuck with no way to pay the licensing, registration, and vehicle taxes. This grant helped me do all that and not have to stress about the big hit of an unexpected expense on my tight budget. I also plan on using the grant money to pay off some debt, as I believe that debt is the number one obstacle many students will face, and it's high on the list for me too.
I believe that as long as people are willing to fight the good fight and help more people get an education, the world will become a better place. I know that I had grown up with a small town mentality like I said, and moving to a bigger town and associating with a more diverse group of people was the first step for me in tearing down some of the small minded ideas I had been taught growing up.”

Jan '25 Okelina (Vermont)
Okelina is a junior in high school but has great ambitions of studying communication and political science.
“One of my biggest obstacles has been balancing academics and my other responsibilities. I have to manage my time between working, doing homework and helping out at home with my siblings and household tasks. I have also been working to improve my writing skills with the help of encouraging teachers.
I really want to do advocacy work to help with global issues such as genocides that are happening in multiple countries. I want to spread awareness about these issues and find solutions. I might potentially like to work for a non-profit organization that helps people in other countries who have lost their homes or face other challenges. I would also like to advocate for women across the world. I am inspired to do this by the many female activists throughout history, like Mary McLeod Bethune and Angela Davis.
I feel relieved that this grant will allow me to work less hours to pay for college. I am also proud to have my hard work and the things I do for other people recognized. Most of all I am thankful.”

Jan '25 Gabbi (Vermont)
Gabrielle plans to return to school to get her Master’s degree in Social Work.
“Although I originally studied education, I have been working in the youth-serving non-profit sector in Burlington, VT for the last four years. The majority of my career has been spent working with immigrants and refugees in and out of school to help them with language skills, navigating systems, connecting to resources and building academic and career skills. I am at a point in my career where I am ready to expand my skills in order to better serve the youth that I work with. An MSW would allow me to bring a more clinical approach to my work, and expand my capacity to offer mental health and other support, as well as take on more leadership-oriented roles in my current line of work. This has been a long-time goal of mine, but with all of my existing student loans and working for non-profits, the financial piece has definitely been my biggest hold-up with going back to school.
Getting this grant will help alleviate the financial burden so that I can focus on going back to school. This grant ultimately means less that I will have to finance in order to return to school which is amazing, especially as I have many other personal goals which would be impacted by adding on additional student loan debt. The less I have to take out loans the better!
Receiving this grant was definitely a surprise to me. I have been doing the type of work that I do for quite some time and I genuinely love it, so going to work for me often just feels like another day and I rarely pay any attention to whether or not I am making a difference. I am so grateful to do a job that I genuinely enjoy, and I feel so lucky in that capacity that I don't often think about the work that I do as having so great an impact for the clients as well.”

Dec '24 Amy (California)
Amy is planning on continuing her education to get her Veterinarian Technician Certification.
“As a retired Marine Corps Veteran, I had the opportunity to have amazing role models to look to and I value the opportunity to be that for others looking to work in the field of service and care of all living beings.
Now that I have retired from the military, I have the ability, time and freedom to focus on my second career as a Zoologist. I chose this career path to help both animals and those who love them. While in the presence of animals I am at ease, at my happiest and my disabilities seem to cease, hence why I feel so fortunate that I love what I do for the animals and the joy it brings to their owners and me.
This grant has given me the confidence, motivation and desire to keep moving forward with my passion for animals in hopes that I can inspire others to follow their passions even through adversity or disabilities.
I am humbled and thankful that you saw something within me that warranted recognition and reward. I understand that this is a golden opportunity for me to continue my education and do something for myself that is earned and therefore given back to my community thru leading, teaching, guiding, and inspiring the next generation of caretakers. Thank you again for your recognition and support, I am forever grateful for your generosity and unwavering care and concern.”

Dec '24 Julia (New York)
Julia is a freshman in high school with wonderful ambitions of either developing her own business or becoming a civil engineer.
“I'm considering these two choices and both are so tempting. In regards to civil engineering… well that is something you can see the impact of everyday. I marvel at how much thought must have been put into making the Brooklyn bridge and if it still stands today just as strong. It would be amazing to be able to design something that can benefit people significantly like that.
You see I have always loved helping people and it hurts me not be able to help all of them. That is also why I am thinking about going to school to learn how to start a business that helps the less fortunate. Until then, since I am already on my way as I am planning on launching a club at school this spring to help people who require food or other necessities. Just feels so good to help!
This grant has given me the opportunity to have a good starting point to be able to maintain myself through college, it's very relieving to know that after I graduate high school I will at least have something to begin with and that it wasn’t money borrowed from my parents.
I would like to thank Trace of Hope from the bottom of my heart. This grant has served as a stepping stone. I will always look up to this program and hopefully one day I can do what this program is doing too, helping students like myself.”

Nov '24 Leanna (Washington DC)
Leanna is studying to get a degree in social work.
“With my degree in social work, I want to help underserved communities by advocating for their needs and providing support in areas like mental health and child welfare. I hope to make a positive impact by empowering individuals to overcome challenges and creating more equitable opportunities for those facing adversity. I am passionate about helping others and making a positive impact on individuals and communities facing adversity. The biggest obstacle I’ve faced in achieving higher education has been managing financial challenges while balancing work and academic commitments.

Nov '24 Karen (Idaho)
Karen is studying accounting and bookkeeping and has an incredible goal of giving back to the community.
“With an accounting degree, my goal would be to leverage the skills and knowledge I’ve gained to help organizations and individuals make informed, ethical financial decisions that can lead to long-term success. The impact I want to have in the world is multifaceted. On a broader scale, I would like to contribute to financial literacy, helping people understand their finances, whether it’s budgeting, saving, investing, or preparing for taxes. Many individuals and small businesses face challenges due to a lack of understanding of financial management, and I want to bridge that gap. After graduation, I plan to volunteer at non-profit organizations like La Posada to help the community with their taxes. I also intend to volunteer at other places to explore different areas of accounting and find the one I enjoy most. Additionally, I hope to raise funds to continue my education in business, as I’ve always been interested in it. I would like to study business management, marketing strategies, and financial aspects to expand my knowledge and skills.
I would use it primarily to support my educational expenses, ensuring that I can fully focus on my academic and professional growth without the burden of financial stress. Specifically, I would allocate the funds toward tuition fees, textbooks, and other essential resources like software or tools required for my accounting studies, such as accounting software. The grant would be invaluable in reducing the financial pressures of education, allowing me to dedicate more time to my coursework, internships, and extracurricular activities related to accounting.
At first, it felt surreal, as I realized the support I was receiving would help me focus on my education without the constant worry about financial barriers. It was a huge relief and a moment of reassurance, knowing that someone believes in my potential and is willing to invest in my future. Receiving this grant has instilled in me a sense of responsibility—to not only work hard and succeed but also to give back in the future. It has reinforced my commitment to making a meaningful contribution to society, especially in the field of accounting, where I can help others make informed financial decisions and achieve long-term success.
Thank you for your generous support. I am honored to receive this scholarship, and it will undoubtedly play a key role in helping me fulfill my academic and professional aspirations.”

Oct ‘24 Guiliana (Texas)
Guiliana is majoring in Medical Professions and hopes to attend Nursing School and become a Pediatric Nurse. “With my nursing degree, I aspire to help children from a young age. Many of the problems and behaviors we face as adults stem from experiences in childhood. I want to make a difference in the medical field and bridge the gap in care that some children do not receive. It is very important to me that we invest in our younger generation, as they are our future.
I plan to use this grant to help pay for my tuition. This funding allows me to worry less about the financial burdens that many students face and instead focus on my goals. One day, I hope to pay this grant forward in other meaningful ways.
Receiving this grant means more than just financial support. It has shown me that my hard work has not gone unrecognized and has opened my eyes to this incredible organization, whose values I aspire to follow as I create change.”

Sept '24 Christopher (Florida)
Christopher, who received an earlier Trace of Hope grant, has graduated with his bachelor’s degree and is now pursuing a master’s degree in social work. “I simply want to be remembered for making this work a better place for having me in it. I have been given the gift of sobriety, and I want to pass that on to countless others as someone passed it on to me. Whether I do that on the micro, mezzo, or macro levels of social work is still undecided, but I know there is work to be done, and I will be one of the ones who does it.
Receiving this grant for the first time helped put food in my stomach, keep a roof over my head, and gas in my car so that I could meet all of life’s demands that come along with pursuing a college degree.
My bachelor’s degree now hangs in my office at work, which is a direct result of YOU helping me to get there. I was also awarded the Undergraduate Student of the Year because you helped alleviate a portion of the stress that college carries with it, helping me to focus on succeeding in my program.
I will use this grant the same way I used the last, you are helping me meet all of life’s demands that can distract me from focusing on my ultimate academic goals.
I am beyond honored that you reached to me. You are helping affirm that the work I am doing is not for no reason. People see what I am achieving and people are talking. All of that talk only brings more light to issues such as substance use disorder. But more importantly, that issues such as those can often end is an individual building a brand new life for themselves, achieving incredible things in their time on this Earth.
I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are making such a profound impact on this journey, and it warms my heart that you are a part of it. When I sit down with individuals battling addiction, I get to cite individuals such as yourselves as advocates for us and our success.”

Aug '24 Johnavann (Kentucky)
Johnavann wants to start a business in either construction, welding, or electrical work by going to trade school to gain more knowledge and certificates in these fields. “The career paths I choose have opportunities within the companies or even owning my own company one day. I do have experience with all three. I think I would feel good about my shelf. It builds your confidence knowing that you built a structure. I would feel grateful for someone to live in a house I built. You never know when your community may need help rebuilding one day. I know I can make an impact if I have the education I hope to obtain one day. So many people rely on others when disaster strikes and you never know when that will be. I want my community to know that I am here for them. My community is my goal. My biggest goal is to help the elderly, who can't afford to make repairs on their homes. I plan on using the grant for trade school. It will help with my expenses with clothing, and with materials that are required.
The grant does mean a lot to me and my family. I will not have to struggle for a higher education. My parents will not have to stress out. They can breathe better knowing I have a grant for my supplies and materials for work and school. I feel grateful.”

July '24 Maya (North Carolina)
Maya is pursuing a chemistry degree and planning on going into Forensic Toxicology after undergrad. "I plan on going into forensic science in hopes of bringing an absolute sense of right and wrong to the justice system. I believe that bringing factors like science into court rulings may help negate unjust decisions, as math and science leave little room for gray areas.
When I was told that I was being awarded this grant I felt warm and encouraged. It felt like a lot of my hard work had paid off and I was immensely happy to have found a support system of people who believe in me and want to support me in my stride to greatness. Success is one thing, but having people by my side cheering me on in my achievements makes it all worth it!"

June '24 Hiba (Illinois)
Hiba is currently pursuing a degree in Economic Data Analytic…”With my degree I aspire to bridge the gap between data and economic policy, particularly in underrepresented communities. My hope is to challenge stereotypes and demonstrate that hijab-wearing women can excel in fields traditionally dominated by others and make an impact in the world The ultimate goal though is not just for personal success, but to empower others through education and opportunity, making a difference in their lives just as education has done for mine. Emily is looking to obtain a Bachelor’s in Human Services this fall with the goal of ultimately obtaining a masters in social work . “I am interested in this field to make sense of my own life and the joys and traumas it's held/holds. However, I quickly realized that I could be the person I needed growing up for others who are currently struggling and that gave me a sense of purpose. I want to open my own practice where I can lower as many barriers as possible to getting care.
Receiving this grant was perfect timing and made me feel so proud of myself as well as hopeful of the future. May '24 Leslie (Idaho)
Leslie is double majoring in Biology and Spanish and minoring in Psychology. “I chose these fields to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Health. Being able to go out into the communities and teach them the importance of caring for yourself is the main reason for what I want to do with my career and in the future. I know I can make an impact in the world with approaching communities before epidemics strike populations.
I am a first generation student and the only daughter of my family. Coming to college away from home was challenging but it’s opportunities like these that pushed my drive to take this leap for my future career. This grant will help me in paying my tuition next fall. Tuition and housing are one of the highest portions of my payments at the college so having the grants helps me know I don’t have to work that much for all my expenses. Receiving this grant gave me a financial lift I had in the moment. I was heading to work during my interview to save money for next semester’s payment so receiving it was thrilling.”

Receiving the grant felt relieving and filled me with lots of joy and appreciation. April '24 - Dylan (Pennsylvania)
Dylan is studying Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. “I want to either go into research or go into the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.I hope that I can work on projects that may bring beneficial biotechnology or pharmaceuticals to life that can help certain problems that people face every day. I think I ultimately want to help others because I genuinely enjoy it, but I also feel that so many people in my life have helped me get to where I am today that I want to help others in the same way.
Getting this grant, outside the obvious benefits, has shown me that things in life ultimately work out the way they should, which has meant a lot to me. It either will allow me to go and directly do those things or I will use it to pay tuition now and do those things later. Either way, it will allow me to find what I specifically want to do in the future alongside the financial pressure it lifts off my shoulders.”

March '24 - West (Washington)
West is studying to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. “I chose this field because I have a desire to help people and to understand how things like the human body and medications that are used for treatment work. I want to provide a comfortable place for all but especially for trans individuals so they can ask medical questions confidentially and feel safe with someone. Creating a comfortable environment in the medical field is important to me as well as showing people that you care.
I am very grateful for this grant, and I plan to use it on classes and books that are needed for the next quarter. It was extremely helpful as I needed some financial help with school to the point where I was thinking that I had to take a break from school. March ' 24 - Catie (New York)
Catie is a junior in college studying English with the hopes of becoming an inspiring author. “When I graduate, I hope to complete a fantasy novel and become a published author. I have always loved storytelling and I would love the opportunity to share my stories with whomever I can. As a non-binary person, I feel as though my gender identity is underrepresented in media, especially in genres such as fantasy. My hope is that one day, through my writing, I can help others who were like me growing up to be able to see themselves in the genre I have always loved so much. I hope to share stories in a way that amplifies the voices of so many people like me who felt afraid to be who they are.
With this grant, I will be able to have a little bit more money to go towards my regular living expenses, like paying for my car, groceries and general purchases like food. I will be able to work less and put more time and attention into my schoolwork and writing so that I can produce work that I am proud of and truly represent myself and my capabilities as a student. Receiving the grant felt like a huge weight off my shoulders. I have been supporting myself through school since my freshman year, and it felt as though for one moment I could breathe without needing to worry about money.”

Feb '24 Lunelle (New York)
Lunelle is currently studying to be a Physical Therapist. “Helping people discover how strong their bodies are and teaching them how to move well and without pain has been at the core of my training style since I started working as a trainer years ago. I decided to go back to schoool to become a Physical Therapist as I am interested in combining my fitness training with physical therapy so that I can work with patients in a clinical setting no just in the gym. As a dancer and personal trainer, I have learned that wellness and movement go beyond physical strength and appearance. It is necessary to comprehend how the various systems of the body work together and have personally seen how this knowledge affects a person's confidence and health-related decisions. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of misinformation about physical health out there and I want to be that voice and the experience that helps people learn and understand and achiever their individual goals. The grant has been a much-needed donation to help me pay for my education. Because I am enrolled in an accelerated program, I cannot work full-time, so this grant has helped me cover the expenses for food, school supplies, and tuition. There are guardian angels in the world who come to your aid and push you along the road of life. Thank you for the push! I can hardly wait for the day when I am in a position to pay it forward and help someone else in need.”

Feb '24 - Christopher (Florida)
Christopher is a senior in college where he is finalizing his undergrad degree in social work while simultaneously awaiting acceptance into the Social Work master’s program. “My goal in continuing my education to obtain my masters is to lend me credibility as I am very open about my past history of drug addiction and alcoholism. I want to make changes on a systemic level, and be a role model by focusing on the barriers that stand in the way of individuals trying to advance in life despite the prior mistakes they have made. There is not a single person on this planet that has not done many things they regret …this should not stand in the way of people righting their wrongs and turning their life around. I want to be a voice of advocacy of this population and work to change legislature to allow former addicts and alcoholics to apply for jobs they would not normally be allowed to qualify for so they can be positive contributors to society. I would not have opportunities such as this if it weren’t for second, third, and fourth chances that multiple people have given me. Everyone, in my opinion, should be afforded these second chances as well.”

Jan '24 Ken'ziah (Kentucky)
Ken’Ziah is currently a senior in high school AND is taking credits at her local community college as well so she can focus her energies, and money, on studying to become a nurse and then a doctor. “I chose nursing to begin with because ever since I was in elementary I have wanted to be a doctor. I have always had a passion for helping others, and have seen over the years the impact doctors can have in people’s lives so healthcare seems like the right avenue for me. Unfortunately, college is expensive so I have made a plan to attempt to get through schooling with very little to no debt. This is why I have chosen to start at a community technical college to get my nursing degree. Once I accomplish that my goal is to work for a few years and then go on to medical school to become a perhaps a dermatologist or anesthesiologist. Whether it is helping them feel more confident in their bodies or making sure they stay asleep during surgery I like that I can personally make a difference in someone’s medical experience.”

Ethan is a recent hight school graduate who simultaneously was studying Information Technology at a local Technical Community College. “I chose this field of study as I want to find new ways to help companies and individuals protect themselves from their information and data being stolen. I have seen the damage done when this happens and the results can be devastating, with the worst case scenario of companies going bankrupt and individuals losing their homes all because they were not properly protected. My goal is to find the solutions to minimize or better yet negate the impact of a cyber attack. It is a lofty goal, but I am determined to succeed and have so much passion to get started that I started classes even before I graduated high school to get ahead. It was at first intimidating to be with students with more experience and so much older than me, but it has all been worth it especially now receiving the Trace of Hope grant. It just shows me that i am on the right path and that feels so good.”

Nov '23 - Tanner (Louisiana)
Tanner is currently studying Critical diversity studies with a concentration in African American Studies. Tanner feels… “ that in a way my field of study chose me. I’ve had to overcome, over and over again, the stigma surrounding Black men and what society believes we are capable. I have had to face the imposter syndrome of it all and battle feeling insecure in all areas of my life. I want to create community for the Black and Brown teens and help them connect to resources for the particular route and passions they see for themselves. I understand how important it is to see someone like you, to have your dreams reflected back to you, so my goal is to work to find and provide opportunities for other minority groups. This grant reinforced that I’m right where I need to be. I look forward to doing this for someone else one day.”

Oct '23 - Autum (Oregon)
Autum is currently attending community college while simultaneously completing a Physical Therapy Assistant program. “My ultimate goal is to practice as a licensed Physical Therapist, treating adults who have undergone life-altering injuries. My decision to pursue this career came after my personal experience recovering from reconstructive knee surgery that resulted in permanent nerve damage. The transition a person goes through when losing the ability to continue with their daily activities is an intensely stressful one. I could not imagine going through the process I did without an experienced and compassionate Physical Therapist and hope to provide this level of support and care to others during their difficult rehabilitation journeys.
I have always worked full time, with extended periods of working 60-70 hours weekly. I wish I had words to describe what it's like to be consistently scared about money, constantly battling burnout, and constantly struggling to make ends meet, only to have a stranger want to help you. It feels unreal to me. I frequently walk through life expecting the worst, and I want to thank Trace of Hope for giving me… just that…hope.

Sept '23 - Sam (Texas)
Sam is studying to become a medical doctor and hopes to become an OB/GYN when she graduates. Sam chose this field because…”I want to increase access to women’s healthcare, especially in a time when giving birth in the US can be a very dangerous and scary environment. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to receive care without fear of judgement or financial burden. My goal once I become a doctor is to advocate and create a safe space for my patients while they are under my care.
I am entirely responsible for financing my education and relied on the campus food bank and career closet to sustain myself. It feels amazing to be recognized and I am going to use this money to pay for my first board exam as I live entirely off my loan package from the university which places me at the poverty line so was not sure how I was going to pay for it, but now I can!”

August '23 Shaina (Louisiana)
Shaina is studying nursing with the goal of eventually becoming a labor & delivery nurse in her hometown. “I had a very difficult end to my teenage years and was given a second chance at life. Since that time I have tried my best to be a better person and was drawn to nursing to achieve that goal. I want to help bring comfort, joy and exceptional care to those who are bringing new life into the world, just as I feel I was supported and given a new life. I plan on using this money to help pay for my cap & gown and graduation photos, which will also be a maternity shoot as I found out I am pregnant, as well as buy gifts to a few people who stood by me throughout this whole process. Turns out my graduation day is just around my due date and I won’t stop until I accomplish both so I can set an example for my child that you are never down and out…that with hard work, determination and kindness to yourself and others, you can accomplish anything.”

July '23 Annie (Utah)
Annie is studying Biology & Chemistry with the goal of getting a doctorate in Chemistry and eventually building a career in conservation. “I choose Chemistry because I loved the subject and Biology as I realized during an internship that I have a passion for protecting the environment. I have been told over and over again that I should reconsider my career choices due to the fact that conservation works does not pay well. But I personally believe in making a positive impact is more fulfilling than having a high salary so am staying the course to make a difference.
I just can thank you enough for this grant. Working three job while being a double major has been stressful. Receiving this grant made me feel recognized for my efforts and has made me excited, and relieved, as I won’t have to constantly worry if I am going to be short on tuition so I can focus on my studies.

June '23 Isiah (New York)
Isiah is studying Criminal Justice with the goal of becoming a law enforcement officer. “My goal is to earn my BA so that I can help out my community and give people a sense of safeness knowing one of their own has their backs. I want to lead the charge in police reform, so starting in my neighborhood and having my community see a police officer that is one of them is the first step.
I was so relieved when I got this grant because I now don’t have to worry about tuition as much for this upcoming semester so can focus on my studies and helping my family. May '23 Izzy (New York)
Izzy is currently a senior in High School and planing to major in biology in college with the hope of becoming a physician assistant (PA).
“I’m pursing PA because I love biology, people and more importantly helping people live better lives. A lot of the people I grew up with don’t even consider college as an outlet, so I want to show countless other first generation Americans, and most importantly my little brothers , who I love dearly and how look up to me, that they can do anything they put their mind to and to strive the best that they can be.
For me this grant guaranteed my admission to Stony Brook. This grant opened a door of hope for me, that I’m not alone, that I can seek scholarships to aid me in my educational endeavor. And thanks to your scholarship I was even able to convince my father the benefits outweigh the cost so I am now going to my first choice for college.”

April '23 Jordan (Oregon)
Jordan is currently taking her prerequisites before she applies to her college’s dental hygiene program in 2024. “I choose the dental hygiene program for two main reasons- to learn more about oral health so I can teach others and to learn more about the long lasting effects on the rest of your body if not maintained properly. I have seen small tumors in the jaw go unnoticed and it’s caused the jaw to break and new reconstruction in a young female. I want to spread awareness that straight teeth are more than just for a pretty smile and help others from experiencing that misery.
This grant helps me tremendously. My parents have been helping so me so I couldn’t wait to tell them about this grant and that my next term will be paid! I feel a weight lifted off my shoulders as I feel finally like I won’t drowning in bills. To some it may not be much, but to me, you’ve helped me move closer to my goal and I couldn’t be more thankful.”

My goal is to get my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Social work. I am choosing this field of study as I feel often children’s needs are not understood or met. I want to be there for them so they know someone is in their corner. This grant was just what I needed as I was starting to wonder if it was to late to get back on track and plan for a better future. Feb '23 Erwyn (Hawaii)
Erwyn is currently working towards his BS in Nursing. Erwyn felt pulled to this career path as he has always had a passion to help others succeed and lead a better life stemming back to when he was a school teacher. “During my years as a teacher I would teach a lot of nurses. It made me realize I too wanted to go down that path and serve others. I have always had a lot of compassion and felt nursing would help me make a difference when someone needed it the most. Often when people are faced with illness, they don’t understand it or will just give up. I want to be that friend, that friend who gives them a voice to make sure they get the best care and keep focused on improving or, if the situation warrants, the comfort if they cannot improve to have the best quality of life until the end.
I will be using this grant to continue my classes and am so touched that the Wong family nominated me for this grant because they saw something so unique in how I supported their father. This has emboldened me to continue to care with compassion as caring without compassion is meaningless, but caring with compassion is divine and makes a noticeable difference.”

Jan '23 - Lila (Colorado)
Lila is currently working towards her master’s degree in social work with a concentration in child welfare and international social work. Lila chose this career path due to her own past experience in the social system. “As I navigated through the social system as a child, I had experiences as with good social workers and some bad social workers which had a profound impact on me. I want and strive to be an example of a good one. Currently, I am working with Arapahoe County currently, and I love it. I do hope to continue my career doing international and immigration work further in the future.
I will be using the grant to pay for the upcoming quarter and be able to finish my first year with not as much stress. This allows me not to have to pick up so many hours at my other jobs and focus on making sure I have food and time for schoolwork and to help those that I support through my social work responsibilities. It is a huge relief, and I will never have the words to express what this means even to receive a grant like this.”

DEC '22 - Mayra (Oregon)
Mayra is in her freshman year and is studying Business Administration with a concentration in marketing.
“Growing up, I have seen and heard the many hardships of the Latino community: Racism and discrimination, ICE deportation camps, economic hardships- the unfair wages for immigrant field workers, Latin women's reproductive health being in jeopardy while in deportation camps, and much more. My goal is to use my degree to influence the media to bring attention to these problems of the Latinx community, so that they are not only seen but heard.
I am paying for my schooling by myself through my labor and savings, having this support gives me peace of mind going into the winter term, allowing me to focus on my classes instead of how I will pay for housing next semester.”

Nov '22 - Luca (Oregon)
Luca is currently working on getting her GED. “I dropped out my Sophomore year due to health reason and had to get a job to support myself. I have been working hard to get back on track, but expenses have kept pushing out my dream of getting my GED and going to college.
Now, with this grant, I can finally pay for the rest of my GED testing and college application fees. I am so excited and thankful. I never thought something like this could happen for me. It is easy to see the negativity in the world, but getting this grant renewed my sense of appreciation for community. It is just so healing to know there are people and organizations out there who want to make a difference!
My ultimate education goal is to get a degree in science. I am especially enthralled with marine biology and the study of botany. Our understanding of marine organisms and how they relate to pharmacology is limited and I would like to explore this further with the goal of developing new treatments for major diseases such as cancer.”

Johanna is a recent HS graduate who is attending Baruch College in the fall. Johanna plans on studying accounting as she would like to help those where english is not their first language navigate the tax system to avoid penalties and truly understand their obligation and contribution.
As a first generation student Johanna struggled learning the english language which impacted her grades. Her goal is to get a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering a passion she picked up from her dad. “My father was a mechanic when he was younger. Thiara further shared with us… “I want you to know that I couldn't have asked for anything better! May '22 Alina (Ukraine)
Alina our May recipient was planning on attending college in the US until her family was forced to use all their funds including Alina’s school money to evacuate her homeland. A professor of the school she was supposed to attend connected with Trace of Hope and other organizations to help Alina realize her dream— and through his persistence for her—that dream is now a reality.
Alina is now a freshman and has declared Advertising as her major so she can reach out and help others. Alina shared with us that this passion not only comes from her desire to repay all the kindness and support she received when her family fled the Ukraine, but also rom her previous work at Teenergizer (https://teenergizer.org/en/who-we-are/) “I know from personal experience that advertising can help others. At Teenergizer we popularized mental health topics among young people through our social media as well as provided free psychological support for teens and young adults. I also have received so much support, and while this doesn’t erase all the pain, it does give me hope and a reason to live. It is this reason I want to help others as I know firsthand how important it is to support those in need. I’m eternally grateful to Trace of Hope for your kind gesture. You have never seen me, but still, you decided to help me, a person from the other side of the world and you don't let me forget that the world supports us, and we are not alone. That is what I want to do for others.”
You are not Alina and we are honored to have helped you.
