Waverly will begin her freshman year at Brown University this fall, where she plans to study Chemistry and Art. Brown’s open curriculum gives her the freedom to explore both interests while preparing for a career in dermatology. She hopes to combine science with creativity by designing healing spaces that use visual art and sound to support patients’ emotional and physical well-being.

Growing up in a single-parent household, Waverly watched her mother make countless sacrifices to create new opportunities for their family. That example taught her the value of hard work and resilience. Throughout high school, she balanced academics, volunteering, work, and responsibilities at home while saving money for college, knowing that the cost of higher education would be one of her biggest challenges.

“I really hope to help young adults who have self-confidence issues due to skin diseases or imperfections like acne. I had bad acne as a kid, and it was not easy. My self-esteem suffered a lot.”

The Trace of Hope grant will help Waverly purchase a new laptop that meets Brown University’s recommendations, replacing her broken computer and giving her a reliable tool for all four years of college. Receiving the grant also means she can make this important investment herself without adding another financial burden to her mother, something she says makes her feel both grateful and proud.
